As of July 1, the disposal fee for mattresses and box springs will be $15 at the South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill, located at 6300 Old Smithfield Road, Apex, N.C.

С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County Solid Waste Management Division manages 11 convenience centers for С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents to drop-off their recycling and trash.

Hours of Operation

  • Daily from 7 a.m.–7 p.m.
  • Closed for holidays on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve (noon) and Christmas Day

 

Acceptable Items

  • Cardboard (clean, flattened, all packing material removed)
  • Clothing and shoes (clean, dry and reusable. No linens.)
  • Electronics (Sites 1, 4 & 11 on weekends only)
  • Food waste (Sites 2, 4, & 7 only)
  • Garbage (household waste and bulky items under 8 feet long/wide)
  • Household construction debris from homeowner only, verification required (Sites 1, 2, 4, 7, 10 & 11 only)
  • Mattress or Box Spring (Sites 1, 2, 4, 7 and 11 only. Residents may only bring a total of two (2) mattresses or box springs per day. Residency verification required. Additional mattresses and box springs may be brought to the shredder at the South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill for a processing fee
  • Mixed recycling (metal food & drink cans, glass bottles & jars, mixed paper, food and beverage cartons, plastic bottles, tubs, jugs & jars) 
  • Oyster shells
  • Scrap metal (power equipment must be drained of gas & oil)

TRASH PASS for Box Truck, Dual-Axle and Enclosed Trailers

In an effort to limit misuse, С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County is requiring residents who bring their waste in a box truck, dual-axle or enclosed trailer to request a free Trash Pass prior to arrival.

The Trash Pass allows С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents temporary use of the Convenience Center when using a box truck, dual-axle or enclosed trailer to dispose of their trash. С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents who bring their waste in a personal vehicle, such as a car, SUV, truck, or single-axle trailer do not need a trash pass. Unacceptable Items

  • Appliances/white goods, such as a/c units, washers/dryers, stoves, refrigerators and water heaters (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
  • Automotive, such as antifreeze, motor oil, oil filters (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
  • Batteries (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)
  • Boat hulls and any other over-sized items that do not fit in Convenience Center containers may be disposed of by С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents at the South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill but will be subject to posted tipping fees (South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill fees)
  • Burning or smoldering material
  • Chemicals, such as acids, bases, solvents, lacquers, paint thinners, paints, fertilizers, pesticides, poisons, corrosives (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)  
  • Commercial, industrial, institutional waste, waste from businesses
  • Concrete, bricks, pavers
  • Contractor waste (refer to Resources for Construction & Demolition facilities)
  • Cooking Oil (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
  • Dead animals (accepted at the South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill), so long as they are not microbiological and/or pathological waste
  • Drums, such as burn barrels containing debris are not accepted. Drums that are empty and punctured are accepted for disposal at Convenience Centers
  • Electronics, any corded electronic device (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
  • Flammables, such as gas, fuel, oil, kerosene (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)
  • Fluorescent light bulbs (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)
  • Hazardous waste, such as chemicals, batteries, oil-based paints, fire extinguishers, mercury thermometers (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)
  • Hot tubs and any other over-sized items that do not fit in Convenience Center containers may be disposed of by С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents at the South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill but will be subject to posted tipping fees (South С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ Landfill fees) 
  • Infectious waste, medical waste
  • Liquid waste, companies capable of properly disposing of this waste can be found in online/phone book under "Hazardous Materials and Waste Contractors." If the product is not hazardous, please refer to the manufacturer's directions for proper disposal suggestions
  • Motor oil (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities
  • Paint (accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Facilities)
  • Propane tanks (accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Facilities). Other gas tanks refer to the manufacturer for proper disposal suggestions
  • Radioactive waste, such as smoke detectors (check inside the detector for company name and address. Consult the product's manufacturer for proper disposal method or contact the ) 
  • Railroad ties
  • Sewage plant sludge (contact the Permits and Engineering Unit, , NC Division of Environmental Quality)
  • Tires (accepted at Multi-Material Drop-Off Facilities)
  • Yard waste, such as grass clippings, branches, pruning’s, weeds, logs (refer to Resources for Yard Waste facilities)

Site Rules

  • Construction waste is only accepted from С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County homeowners only. Construction debris is NOT accepted from renters, haulers or contractors/businesses (unless С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County homeowner is present at time of disposal).
  • С»ÆÑ¼ÊÓÆµ County residents using a box truck, dual-axle or enclosed trailer to dispose of their trash at Convenience Centers will require a trash pass.  to apply.
  • No exchange of materials allowed on site.
  • All open-body vehicles transporting waste must be secured to prevent blown and spilled debris.
  • No person may loiter or rummage about the facility or remove articles from any containers.
  • Children & pets must remain in vehicles at all times.
