Testing Related Questions

What kind of testing is offered and when?

We offer no-cost testing at the С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County Public Health Center every weekday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and at various community events.

  • Clinic A:
    • Monday-Friday: 8:00am-5:00pm (except Tuesday, 9:00am-5:00pm)
    • Walk-ins: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at 8:00am and 12:00pm; Tuesday at 9:00am and 12:00pm
    • For appointments, call (919) 250-4410
  • Clinic E:
    • Tuesdays & Thursdays: 5:30pm-7:30pm (Walk-ins only)
  • Community events: Check our Facebook, contact a member of the team, or look for flyers in the community.

Both clinics test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis C, and offer medication if results are positive. Clinic A can also test for trichomoniasis and herpes if symptoms are present.

Testing at community events includes at a minimum HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C.

How long does testing take?

Testing generally takes about 15 minutes, but can extend to 30-45 minutes with additional counseling if needed. This does not include wait time.

Are there options to not have blood drawn from the arm?

A blood draw is required for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing. Gonorrhea and chlamydia testing require oral, vaginal and/or rectal swabs. Urine samples are required for males. Please note that STDs can be transmitted through oral, vaginal and anal sex, so receiving all swabs are ideal for a full panel screening.

How long after exposure should I get tested?

We recommend testing about three (3) weeks after unprotected sex or exposure to someone who tested positive. Refrain from having sex while waiting to test.

How frequently am I able to test with С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County?

You can test every 90 days (three months). If you are symptomatic or have been exposed to an STD, you can return to the clinic before 90 days.

How often should I come back to be retested?

At a minimum, we recommend annual testing. More frequent testing is advised if you have new partners, multiple partners, unprotected sex with an unsure partner, or symptoms of an STD.

If I have been in contact with someone who is positive for an STD, can I receive treatment?

Yes, if you have a Partner Notice Card, you can bring it to the clinic for treatment. Without the card, testing is required before treatment.

  • Clinic E: Results can be obtained during Clinic E hours or by calling the number on your contact card. Note that results are not given by email, mail, or text.

We can provide results over the phone for all STD tests except HIV. For non-HIV results:

Will you reach out with my results?

Confidentiality and Records

Is testing completely confidential? Do I have to show ID?

Testing is confidential. Clients are referred to by number to protect privacy. ID is required for testing at Clinic A during business hours but not for Clinic E or community events.

To request records, complete a form with a photo ID at G-92 on the ground floor of Sunnybrook during business hours. Alternatively, email or fax Medical Records (phi@wake.gov or fax: 919-250-9856).

Processing typically takes 10 days, but no longer than 30 days. Fees apply for personal requests; there is no charge for medical facility requests.
