For the second year in a row, the Sheila B. Jones Environmental Education Scholarship has recognized an outstanding student pursuing a career in environmental education. This year’s recipient is Paige Meadows, a junior at North Carolina State University from Henderson. Paige is majoring in Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology with a minor in Environmental Education and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support her academic journey.
“We were looking for a student who is highly motivated, hard-working, curious and passionate about teaching others about environmental stewardship,” said СѼƵ County Commissioner Tara Waters. “Paige has proven herself to be deeply committed to wildlife and education. She has maintained exceptionally high grades while actively engaging in both volunteer and paid opportunities related to wildlife, agriculture, conservation and education.”
Paige has volunteered with the Piedmont Wildlife Center and Raleigh Parks and Recreation and is actively involved in several NC State clubs focused on wildlife and environmentalism. She wants to become a wildlife caretaker and educator and is also interested in serving as a ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“With this scholarship, I hope to cover a large portion of my senior year tuition, which would not be possible otherwise,” said Paige. “I also plan to pay for my environmental education certification, which will allow me to make a difference in the future of the environment.”
Launched by the Friends of the СѼƵ Soil and Water Conservation District, the Sheila B. Jones Environmental Education Scholarship supports high school seniors in СѼƵ County who have been accepted into college, as well as current college students residing in СѼƵ County. Each year, one outstanding student is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to advance their career in environmental education.
The next application cycle will open in January 2026.
