Visitors on the Autism Spectrum
We welcome families with children and adults on the autism spectrum. The following resources will help you plan for an enjoyable visit.
The С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County portion of the American Tobacco Trail is a recreational rail-trail open to walkers, runners, dog walkers, bicyclists and horseback riders. This rail-trail project spans 22 miles, from rural New Hill in western С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County through northeast Chatham County to downtown Durham. The С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County section of the Trail is mostly shaded and benches are located at various points along the Trail. Drinking water is only available at the Wimberly Road parking area. Preparing for your visit a few days beforehand can make for a more manageable and enjoyable experience.

Visitors of Different Physical Abilities
The trail surface in the С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County section is composed of crushed granite screenings that are wheelchair accessible. In addition, e-bikes (bicycles with an integrated electric motor used to assist propulsion) are permitted.
Both the New Hill and White Oak parking areas feature ADA-compliant restrooms and parking. Clearly marked accessible parking spaces are located near the restroom building at New Hill, with additional accessible spaces at the picnic area at the bottom of the hill nearest the start of the trail.
Birdability
Birding is for everybody. That's why all three trailheads of the С»ÆѼÊÓƵ County section of the American Tobacco Trail are proud to be recognized locations by Birdability, in collaboration with the National Audubon Society.
